Assuming you have a full desktop running, if no window has focus, focus is set
to the desktop (xfdesktop)

Pressing alt-F4 while the focus is on the desktop will (should) prompt for
termination of the session.

Can you check in ~/.xsession-errors for any indication of a crash?
