benny, when I try unsetting DISPLAY it doesn't work at all anymore - I get in
~/.xsession-error:

cannot open display:
Run 'evince --help' to see a full list of available command line options.

I guess I'll look at the gtk code, to see what gdk_spawn_on_screen actually
does.
