I'm sorry, but a desktop environment cannot make an unrelated app crash. 
Period.  It is *by definition* a bug in the application that crashes.  I've
heard that installing firefox with "gnome support" (whatever that is) sometimes
fixes weird desktop-dependent firefox crashes for some people; perhaps you
should try that.
