After some poking around I found gdmflexiserver does what I need (thanks for
the pointer!). I simply made a launcher to have a fast access to it. So it's ok
for me now, but IMHO it still should be still be better integrated with the
desktop. For example, by presenting an additional choice "switch user" when
ending a session.
