An alternate button is a decent idea to avoid accidental dragging, but it's not
very self-documenting; i.e., it behaves differently from what a user would
expect.  Another option would be a key combo - hold down ctrl and drag, or
something like that, but that has the same problem.

Not saying either is inherently bad, but...
