This is pretty much impossible to debug, given the size of the source code of
Firefox. If you ask me, I'd say that if Firefox crashes, then Firefox should be
fixed.

I think we can say that most people are using Firefox with Xfce and I've never
heard of such a problem.

Can you try a strace (or a truss on FreeBSD) on the Firefox process? Do you
have a backtrace? Is it related tothe download location? Do you close the
download window between downloads? 

What about the gtk theme you use? You could try changing the gtk theme/engine
and also the icon theme in the UI settings manager, who knows.
