If you're seeing:

** (xfdesktop:30012): CRITICAL **: Unusable XfceDesktopIconStyle: 2.  Unable to
display desktop icons.

on console, that means xfdesktop wasn't compiled with desktop file icon support
(needs the correct versions of thunar-vfs and dbus).  Maybe this is a problem
with the installer, or you have outdated versions of those libraries on your
system that's confusing the configure script, but it's not a problem with
xfdesktop.
