It certainly looks possible that alsa is the culprit. I haven't been able to
verify it (I have alsa compiled into the kernel rather than as modules), but the
init.d script certainly goes through and kills of any processes that are using alsa.

I'm surprised though that the panel uses alsa. I can't recall it emitting any
sounds, and I removed the volume control applet when I started looking at the issue.

Anyway, once I get a bit of time I'll recompile it to use alsa modules instead,
and see what happens.
