whoops.  i had the wrong bug open.  this doesn't really make sense, as there are
SVG and PNG images for the MCS plugins (or at least there should be).  btw, this
SVG problem of yours has nothing to do with xfce - it's a gtk issue (actually, a
package management issue?).  at any rate, you need to install gtk engines to the
prefix where gtk is installed.
