[Xfc-dev] Re: CVS updated to support GTK+ 2.6 (xl g)

	Hi:

This is a (constructive) criticism to XFC ... ;-)

Some days ago I downloaded and installed xfc. I installed
without problems on Slackware 10.0, but I had to install a lot of
software upgrades on Slackware 9.1. Finally it worked.

Now I see that latest xfc version needs gtk 2.6. It implies I
have to upgrade my Slackware 10.0 distro (only 8 moths old) to include
gtk 2.6. I am sure will have some nightmares installing it on Slackware
9.1.

My (positive) criticism is that latest versions of xfc requires
very latest versions of some other software. It would be better to
depend on not so-new soft.

I think a good solution would be to create some branch from
main development stream to include new features, but to maintain old
versions. I mean, something similar to gcc releases, 3.4.x is latest
bleeding-edge development mainstream, but previous 3.3.x branch is open
for bugfixes.

This way, some bugs can be solved avoiding dependencies on new
features and new external bleeding-edge soft (e.g. gtk 2.6).

On the REALLY positive comments ;-) these last days I started
to code my first xfc programs ... and it is really nice!!! I read an
image from file, display it on screen, react to mouse movements ...

Some time ago I wrote an off-topic message related to GUI
programming on Linux. These days I was looking at xfc and qt, and the
only advantadge I found on qt is that there is the 'designer' program
to design GUI's. This does not exists on xfc (at least I was unable to
find it). I tried with glade, but generated code is plain GTK. Can I
use this code on xfc?

cheers

Xavier
