I think people have come to expect a search feature in file managers, 
and if we look at Tracker in particular it is not just a simple desktop 
search tool but also incorporates tagging of files... which is quite 
useless without a file manager to read those tags and organise files 
accordingly.

Over a year ago there were discussions on this list about incorporating 
a tagging filesystem in thunar:

The problem then was that none of the solutions were practical: 
cross-desktop and scalable.  Tracker seems to be very stable now and I 
think it's in Ubuntu Gusty Gibbon by default.
