That was sarcasm.  As in, HAL has been around for quite some time now,
and yet Linux is still the only supported platform.  Hence the idea of
creating a user-level abstraction and filling in the kernel-mode bits
for various platforms hasn't worked (in this case, anyway).

I've never really looked too deeply into any HAL-based apps, so I have
no idea...
