Currently, at any rate, GConf is only optionally used to get a list of
Gnome thumbnailing scripts, which are used in additional to a fast
Jpeg thumbnailer, and a general purpose gdk-pixbuf based thumbnailer.

The end effect is that if you have Gnome installed at build time, then
Thunar will be able to use thumbnailer scripts for mime types such as
PDFs or text files. If not, then you'll only get thumbnails for
gdek-pixbuf supported types.
