I agree, I think the plugin idea is best, that way if a user wants only 
basic properties thats what they get. If they want more they can have a 
module to give them more. There could easily be a module to include the 
extended metadata for files.
In fact maybe one should be included by default as I think Erik is right 
about it's theoretical importance.
