I vote for #2.  On the occasion that I see someone browsing photos in
WinXP, I really like the folder thumbnail view.  I have Win2k on my work
laptop, and kinda wish I could play with it ^_~.

I think it's fine to use the standard mime icons in the main
icon/details views.  While I'm not the expert here, I don't think
there's a big loss usability-wise; it's just that the icon/details views
are meant for *file* browsing and managing, not image browsing.
Providing a separate view for image thumbnails makes up for this
"deficiency" -- and in a very useful and somewhat-advanced manner -- and
keeps the main views nice and fast for doing what they're designed to do.

(If you're looking at a folder full of 1600x1200 photos, little 16x16 or
even 32x32 thumbnails aren't going to be very useful anyway, IMHO.)
