The time to load /usr/bin in gtk+ is 14s (cold). I think noone expects such behaviour. And /usr/bin isn't the biggest possible directory - I have 992 files in it...

KDE on the other hand doensn't show the files instantly, but a number of first files in a directory are available to the user almost instantly
