<div>The problem with that is that if I, between two updates by the plugin, read one unread e-mail and receive another new e-mail. In that case I will have the exact same number of unread mails as on the last update but it will not mean that I do not have new e-mails to check.</div>

<div>This thing needs a proper updating algorithm with some hashing of unread message ids to avoid this situation.</div>

<div>Although, as a temporary fix, your solution will deal with the spurious notifications when deleting unread messages.</div>
